How to activate Dynamic Power Sharing?

Dynamic Power Sharing (DPS) is a smart feature that continuously monitors your building’s energy demands and intelligently manages power distribution to Wallbox chargers. This guide will walk you through enabling DPS, ensuring you get the most out of your charging infrastructure while maintaining energy efficiency.

How does it work?

Dynamic Power Sharing (DPS) is a technology that keeps a close watch on your building’s energy needs. It compares the energy demand to the maximum allowable value. When the demand is lower than the maximum, DPS efficiently directs the surplus power to your charging network. However, if the building’s demand equals or exceeds its maximum limit, no additional energy is supplied to the charging stations. This ensures optimal power utilization without overloading the electrical system.

One of the key advantages of DPS is its ability to make the most of periods when your building’s energy demands are minimal. During these times, DPS can supply power to the charging network without increasing the overall power consumption. This smart approach lets you charge your electric vehicles effectively while maintaining energy efficiency.

1. Installation requirements

Before activating Dynamic Power Sharing, go through the following requirements and ensure they are all met to guarantee proper functionality:

  1. Install a Wallbox energy meter: DPS requires an energy meter sold by Wallbox to be installed. You can find compatible meters in the Wallbox catalogue.
  2. Ensure compatibility with other EMS: DPS cannot be used simultaneously with Eco-Smart. However, it is fully compatible with all the other EMS.

2. Activating Dynamic Power Sharing with the myWallbox App

After your charger and energy meter have been correctly installed by your installer and all the requirements above have been met, you can activate DPS in the myWallbox App by following the steps below:

Step 1: Connect your App to your charger

  1. Before you begin, ensure your Wallbox charger and myWallbox app run the latest versions.
  1. Open the myWallbox app and log in using your credentials. You can easily register within the app if you don’t have an account yet.
  1. Select your charger and ensure your smartphone remains within Bluetooth range throughout the configuration process. Follow these instructions if your charger isn’t linked to your myWallbox account.
  2. If it’s the first time you’re connecting your charger to the myWallbox app, establish a Bluetooth connection. If you’ve already done this, wait until the Bluetooth connection is established.

Step 2: Setting up Dynamic Power Sharing

Once your charger and myWallbox App are synchronized, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the “Settings” cogwheel icon in the top-right screen’s corner.
  2. Tap “Upgrades” under “Energy Features” and then “Power Sharing”.
  3. Specify the number of chargers on your installation.
  4. Define the “Building breaker max. current”, corresponding to the maximum current per phase for both the Power Sharing network + the building.
  5. Define the “Minimum current per charger” (in amps) each charger will operate.
  6. Turn on Dynamic Power Sharing.
  7. Tap “Save”, and the status “Primary charger with all secondary chargers paired” should appear.

Only Max. current per phase greater than 6 amps is accepted for correct performance. Contact Wallbox Service in case of doubts.

Dynamic Power Sharing is now configured and activated for your charger(s).

3. Troubleshooting

Safety and Warranty Disclaimer

The charger’s installation, maintenance, and servicing must only be carried out by qualified personnel per the applicable local regulations. Unauthorized installations and modifications will void the manufacturer’s warranty.

3.1. User Troubleshooting

If you have a compatible meter installed correctly but are still having trouble activating Dynamic Power Sharing, it could be due to your charger not detecting the energy meter. Before contacting your installer, try these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Ensure you have a compatible energy meter installed correctly.
  2. Check if the energy meter is powered on.
  3. Power off and then on your charger. Sometimes, the charger may not recognize the energy meter if powered on after the charger.
  4. Verify if your charger’s software is up to date.
  5. Close the myWallbox App, reopen it, and disconnect and reconnect the charger via Bluetooth.
  6. For Carlo Gavazzi energy meters, ensure that the ‘Rx’ and ‘Tx’ icons are blinking in the bottom right corner of the energy meter screen. If not, try restarting the charger again, as it may not communicate with the meter.

3.2. Installer Troubleshooting

If the previous steps haven’t resolved the issue, the installer can perform the following checks:

  1. Ensure the wiring between the charger and the energy meter is correct, including proper connections and continuity. Make sure to use the appropriate cable type (Cat5e).
  2. Power off both the charger and the energy meter, then measure the resistance between D+ and D- (or B+ and A- on the energy meter). It should measure around 60 Ohms.
  3. Check that the RS485 switch is in position T and the rotary switch is set to a position between 1 and 7.
  4. If CT clamps are being used, verify their position and orientation.
  5. Power on the meter first, then the charger, and ensure that the meter measures power consumption when the vehicle is charging with household appliances turned on. If the energy meter isn’t measuring vehicle or household consumption, it may be incorrectly wired or damaged.
